(February, 2007)
In conjunction
with South London and Maudsley Charitable Trust (SLAM), CWMT has agreed to fund £7,500 (50%) to launch a pilot edition of a new magazine for people with mental health difficulties. This has largely been written by those with personal experience of such problems. The proposal was put forward by Social Spider based in Islington.
The pilot edition of 10,000 will be distributed within the SLAM geographical area and if successful will be gradually rolled out nationally.
A Steering Group has been set up including representatives of SLAM and CWMT.  It met for the first time on 30th January, 2007.

(July, 2007)
Delivery of 10,000 copies of the pilot edition is due on 3rd July, 2007. Distribution will be mainly within the SLAM area of responsibility but MIND offices and libraries within Greater London will also receive copies. The pilot edition can now be downloaded at www.oneinfourmag.org.
Details of how to access One In Four electronically will be published on their site as soon as possible after 3rd July.
Depending on the success of the pilot edition, Social Spider hope to publish Edition 1 early in 2008.

(October, 2007)
The pilot issue of 10,000 copies was distributed in July 2007 as planned with help from the London Libraries Development Agency, MIND, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, Community Options and various PCTs across Greater London.
The response to the issue has been overwhelmingly positive with the print run of 10,000 oversubscribed. In addition over 4,500 have downloaded the online version.
We are now working with Social Spider to plan and obtain funding for a 50,000 copy edition early in 2008 and quarterly thereafter.

(January, 2008)
1in 4 Magazine. The next issue of the Magazine will be published three months from the point that Social Spider has raised sufficient funds to publish 12 quarterly issues each with a print run of 50,000 over a period of three years. Social Spider is pursuing a number of initiatives in support of this policy:

  • Applications have been made to a number of public and private sector funders. Note that CWMT has agreed to commit funds over three years once overall funding has been secured.
  • Social Spider is investigating the provision of focus group based consultation for local PCTs with any profits being committed to 1 in 4 Magazine.
  • Close links with MIND are being developed which could influence the content of the magazine (without compromising stated editorial policy), distribution, marketing and PR.

(July 2008)
Social Spider has published the first edition of its magazine using its own resources to fund publishing, printing and distribution costs albeit helped by a significant subscription from MIND. CWMT and South London and Maudsley Trust along with other potential funders have been approached to support a three year commitment to four editions each year and are considering their respective responses.
